Former Don Bosco quarterback Matt Simms will play football in 2009 for El Camino Community College in Torrance, Calif.
His father, Phil Simms, told a Louisville radio station that Matt is headed the junior college route after transferring out of the University of Louisville following his redshirt freshman season.
According to a source familiar with the situation, the younger Simms will spend one year at El Camino before hopefully moving on to Oklahoma or Penn State for his final two seasons of eligibility. If he were to transfer directly to another Division I-A school, he would have to sit out the upcoming season.
"He’s excited about it, and I am excited about it for him, too,"
Phil Simms told the radio station. "He’s disappointed, and I am disappointed that it did not work out in Louisville. Why? I don’t know. But that’s just the way it is. When you are not wanted, leave."
Matt Simms played in two games last season while backing up senior Hunter Cantwell, completing four of 10 passes for 39 yards with one interception. He figured to be the heir apparent, but then the Cards brought in JUCO quarterback Adam Froman. That plus knowledge of the impending resignation of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jeff Brohm, who officially left the program Monday, apparently prompted Simms to leave the school.
Meanwhile older brother Chris Simms, who is scheduled to become a free agent Feb. 27, told a Nashville paper the Tennessee Titans have expressed interest in retaining him. Simms finished up the 2008 season as the Titans’ No. 3 quarterback behind Kerry Collins and Vince Young.
