Three tryout players made their way onto the Saints roster after impressing New Orleans’ coaches during this past weekend’s rookie mini-camp.
Defensive tackle Earl Heyman, guard Shawn Flanagan and receiver Matthew Simon all will be with the Saints at least through min-camp the first weekend of June. Additionally, sources said tackle Michael Brown is expected to be signed at a later date.
The team also wavied guard Cedric Dockery and offensive tackle Sam McNaulty.
Heyman (6-foot-1, 289 pounds) started for the past two seasons at Louisville. This past season, he finished with 35 tackles and five sacks. In four years as a Cardinal, he finished with 114 tackles and 10 sacks.
Flanagan also transferred midway through his college career. The 6-5, 302-pounder started at Oregon, but academic issues forced him to transfer. He finished at Sioux Falls in North Dakota where he was named a second-team NAIA All-American guard.
Simon (6-1, 199) played three seasons at Northern Illinois, starting 17 of 44 games while finishing with 1,660 yards on 96 catches. He found the end zone eight times in his career, including twice in his final season with the Huskies. His best season was his junior year, when he tallied 969 yards and five touchdowns on 52 catches, earning him second-team All-Mid-America Conference honors.
Brown (6-5, 300) ended his career at Mississippi State in Starkville, Miss., after starting at the University of Florida. He was originally projected as a mid-to-late round selection.
