Ryan says Ravens' snub is "a major chip" on his shoulder
Reaching the Super Bowl isn't Rex Ryan's only motivation as the New York Jets head coach. He also wants to prove the doubters inside the Ravens' organization that passed him over in favor of John Harbaugh as head coach in 2008.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated's Peter King, Ryan spoke about his disappointment over not replacing Brian Billick as the Ravens head coach three years ago.
"Coaching in Baltimore 10 years and then not getting the job, that's a thing that drives me," Ryan said. "As much as I respect the people in the Ravens' organization, they never thought I could do the job, and that's a major chip on my shoulder."
Ryan was interviewed for the job after four seasons as the Ravens' defensive coordinator.
In two years as the Jets head coach, Ryan has posted a 24-14 record (.631) with two trips to the AFC championship game. In three seasons with the Ravens, Harbaugh has a 36-19 record (.654) with three straight trips to the playoffs.
